At just 24, Wasser faced a life-threatening situation due to Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS), a rare but serious condition linked to certain bacterial toxins, often associated with tampon use. After experiencing severe flu-like symptoms, she was found unconscious in her home. By the time she reached the hospital, her organs were failing, and doctors had to amputate her right leg below the knee to save her life. Following years of pain and complications, she underwent a second amputation of her left leg in 2018.
What followed was a remarkable transformation. Wasser's golden prosthetic legs, inspired by her favorite artist A$AP Rocky, became symbols of resilience and a new definition of beauty. She has since walked the runways for luxury brands and appeared in campaigns for companies like Lacoste and Furla. Her influence has graced the covers of major fashion magazines, including Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, and she was recognized as Glamour Germany's Woman of the Year in 2023 for her advocacy and impact on the fashion industry.
Advocacy Beyond Fashion
Wasser's journey extends beyond the runway. After losing both legs to TSS, she became a passionate advocate for the Robin Danielson Act, a US bill aimed at investigating the health risks associated with chemicals in menstrual products. She has actively engaged with lawmakers to promote legislation requiring brands to disclose the ingredients in their tampons. Her advocacy is deeply personal, as she aims to challenge the misconception that TSS only occurs when a tampon is left in for too long—a narrative she believes has been perpetuated by tampon companies to evade accountability.
In previous interviews, Wasser has stated, "Toxic shock syndrome has been happening for over 30 years, affecting and claiming the lives of thousands of women. I feel a responsibility to be the voice for those who can no longer speak for themselves." Her appearance at the 2026 MET Gala resonated with the event's body-positive theme and underscored her commitment to advocating for disability representation in fashion.
