Rapper and producer Lil Jon has made a startling discovery about his family history in adulthood, learning that Willie, the man he grew up believing was his biological father, was not related to him biologically.

The musician, whose real name is Jonathan Smith, has opened up about the revelation in his memoir, I Only Shout So You Can Hear Me . In an interview with PEOPLE, Jon described the discovery as deeply unsettling, leaving him with questions he may never be able to answer.

“You never think that will happen to you,” Jon told the publication. “And when it happens to you, it just knocks you back, and you got so many questions.”

How Lil Jon discovered the truth about his biological fatherLil Jon said he learnt about his biological parentage recently after a cousin took a DNA test to explore their family history. When the cousin shared the results with him, Jon noticed that their genetic connection did not match what he had expected.

“He shared his map with me,” the “Get Low” artist recalled. “We weren't matching for some reason.”

The revelation challenged what Jon had understood about his family throughout his life. He was raised by his mother, Carrie, and Willie, alongside his brothers Willie Junior and Chris, as well as his adopted siblings, Mario and Sheena.

Although the discovery has left him searching for answers, Jon said his cousin reassured him that he still considered them family.

Lil Jon reflects on the man who raised himWillie played an important role in Jon’s childhood, supporting him as he developed an interest in music. Jon began learning the drums at the age of six, although his parents initially struggled to understand his musical ambitions.

Willie died of bone marrow cancer during Jon’s rise to fame in the early 2000s. The rapper believes the man who raised him would have been proud to witness the success he eventually achieved.

“He didn't really see me become a star,” Jon said, reflecting on Willie’s death. He added that Willie “would've just been so proud” of his accomplishments.

Jon’s mother, Carrie, lived long enough to witness his growing fame. She died in 2013 after suffering a stroke linked to complications from diabetes.

Looking back on her reaction to his success, Jon recalled how happy she had been, describing himself as her firstborn and her baby.

Why Lil Jon may never get answers about his familyThe discovery has been particularly difficult because the people who could have helped explain his biological history are no longer alive.

“Neither one of my fathers are here anymore, nor my mother, so I can't get answers,” Jon told PEOPLE. “And that drives you crazy as well, until you get to the point where you have to accept that you will never get answers.”

The musician has since received contact from his biological father's side of the family, with his brother and sister reaching out to him. However, Jon admitted that he has not yet felt ready to process the news or begin those conversations.

“I have had my brother and sister reach out on my biological dad's side, but I haven't been ready to process that yet and have that conversation, because it's just so heavy, man,” he said.

For Jon, accepting the revelation is likely to take time as he comes to terms with a part of his identity that remained unknown to him for decades.

Lil Jon opens up about losing son NathanThe family revelation comes during an especially painful period in Jon’s personal life. The rapper is also grieving the death of his son, Nathan Smith, who pursued music as DJ Young Slade.

Nathan, whom Jon welcomed with his former wife, Nicole Smith, in 1998, died at the age of 27 earlier in 2026. He went missing in early February and was found dead days later in a pond near his home in Milton, Georgia. His death was ruled an accidental drowning in the setting of psilocybin use.

The loss has reinforced Jon’s understanding of how precious time with loved ones can be. As he continues to navigate grief and unexpected revelations about his family, he says his perspective on relationships has changed.

Why fatherhood has changed Lil Jon’s perspective on lifeJon is also a father to his young daughter, Nahara, whom he shares with his partner, Jamila Sozahdah. The experience of fatherhood has further strengthened his belief that family should never be taken for granted.

“The No. 1 lesson I tell people now is, don't feel like you can put something off for tomorrow, because you don't know how much time you have with people,” he said.

“Fatherhood has taught me that family is everything.”
