Mexican artist José Zendejas Foyo will make his India debut with Amores (Loves), a solo exhibition exploring the shifting nature of love through abstraction. The exhibition, presented by Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art in association with the Consulate General of Mexico in Mumbai, opens on October 8 and will be on view until November 18 at the gallery’s Colaba space.

The series examines different forms of love, from tenderness and fleeting attraction to toxicity, loss and obsession. Each painting begins with a name such as Amor (Love), Amor Tóxico (Toxic Love), Amor Fugaz (Fleeting Love) and Amor Perdidos (Lost Loves), before translating the emotion into colour, gesture and texture.

Foyo turns to abstraction to capture emotional states that he believes are difficult to express through language. “When I think about each type of love, I do not visualise scenes or figures. What arises is a very particular energy that manifests within me as a pure emotional state,” he says.

Colour forms the core of the series, with the artist using what he describes as “chromatic feelings” to convey different emotional experiences. In Amor Tóxico, for instance, dense greys and blacks are contrasted with electric blue, creating a tension between attraction and deterioration. Other works use hot pinks, acid yellows and deep reds to evoke different emotional registers.

Gallerist and curator Anupa Mehta says the exhibition seeks to give form to emotions that are difficult to articulate through words. “What he cannot explain in words, but which colour, gesture and texture are able to express,” she says.

Consul General of Mexico in Mumbai Adolfo García Estrada notes that the exhibition offers Mumbai audiences an opportunity to discover a contemporary Mexican artist and another expression of the country’s artistic diversity.

Amores opens on October 8 from 6pm to 9pm as part of Art Night Thursday. The exhibition will be open daily from 11am to 6pm, except Sundays and public holidays.
