Ingredients Required for Mini Samosa Bites

For the outer covering:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (maida)
  • 2 tablespoons semolina (sooji)
  • 3 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • A pinch of salt
  • Water as required
For the filling:

  • 2 medium-sized boiled potatoes
  • ¼ cup boiled green peas
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • ½ teaspoon cumin seeds
  • ½ teaspoon coriander powder
  • ¼ teaspoon red chilli powder
  • ½ teaspoon garam masala
  • ½ teaspoon amchur powder
  • 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves
  • Salt to taste
For frying:

  • Oil as required

Step-by-Step Method to Make Mini Samosa Bites

1. Prepare the Samosa Dough

Take all-purpose flour in a large mixing bowl. Add semolina, salt and ghee or oil. Mix everything using your fingertips until the flour resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

Gradually add water and knead into a firm, smooth dough. Avoid making it too soft, as a firm dough helps the samosas retain their shape while frying.

Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for approximately 20 to 25 minutes.

2. Prepare the Potato and Pea Filling

Heat one tablespoon of oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and allow them to crackle. Add the boiled green peas and lightly mash them.

Now add the boiled potatoes, coriander powder, red chilli powder, garam masala, amchur powder and salt. Mix everything thoroughly.

Cook the mixture for a few minutes until the spices are evenly combined. Add chopped coriander leaves, switch off the heat and allow the filling to cool completely.

3. Divide the Dough Into Small Portions

After resting, knead the dough lightly and divide it into small equal-sized portions.

Roll each portion into a small oval or circular sheet using a rolling pin. Keep the thickness moderate so that the outer covering becomes crisp without turning too thick.

Cut each rolled sheet into two halves to prepare the samosa wrappers.

4. Shape the Mini Samosas

Take one half of the rolled sheet and fold it into a cone. Apply a little water along the overlapping edge to seal it properly.

Fill the cone with a small amount of the prepared potato mixture. Avoid overfilling it, as this may cause the covering to open during frying.

Apply a little water along the open edges and press them together firmly to create a triangular mini samosa. Repeat the process with the remaining dough.

5. Fry Until Golden and Crispy

Heat oil in a deep frying pan over a low to medium-low flame. Carefully add a few mini samosas at a time, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.

Fry them slowly, turning occasionally so that all sides cook evenly. Once they develop a golden-brown colour and a crisp texture, remove them using a slotted spoon.

Place the fried samosas on absorbent kitchen paper to remove excess oil.

6. Serve With Chutneys

Arrange the mini samosa bites on a serving platter. Pair them with mint-coriander chutney, tamarind chutney or tomato sauce.

For a festive presentation, serve them in small paper cups or arrange them around a bowl of chutney. You can also sprinkle a little chaat masala over the samosas just before serving.

Tips to Make Perfect Mini Samosas

  • Keep the dough firm rather than soft or sticky.
  • Add enough ghee or oil to the flour to achieve a crisp outer layer.
  • Allow the filling to cool completely before stuffing the samosas.
  • Do not overfill the wrappers, as this can cause them to split.
  • Seal the edges properly using a little water.
  • Fry over a low to medium-low flame for an evenly cooked, crunchy covering.
  • Let the samosas cool slightly before serving.

Can You Prepare Mini Samosas in Advance?

Yes, you can prepare the filling and dough in advance to save time before your Diwali party. You can also shape the samosas a few hours earlier and keep them covered in the refrigerator until you are ready to fry them.

For better results, fry them shortly before serving so that they retain their crisp texture. If preparing them completely in advance, allow them to cool and reheat in an oven or air fryer until crisp.

Mini samosa bites are a convenient and delicious addition to a Diwali party menu. Their small size makes them easy to serve, while the traditional potato and pea filling gives them a familiar Indian flavour. With a little preparation, you can make these crispy snacks using basic kitchen ingredients and serve them with your favourite chutneys. Prepare a fresh batch for your festive gathering and add another homemade favourite to your Diwali snack platter.
