Nagaland Film Angh Enters Oscar 2027 Race After Winning TIFF Platform Award

Nagaland-based film Angh has secured the top honour in the Platform section at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2026. The major achievement gives the film a direct pathway to the Oscars 2027 International Feature Film category, marking an important milestone for Indian cinema and Indigenous filmmaking.

The win has also drawn praise from several well-known names from the Indian film industry, including filmmaker-actor Anurag Kashyap.

What Is Angh About?

Set in Nagaland in the 1960s, Angh

centres on an elderly Konyak chief and his son. The two are among the last people in their village holding on to their ancestral beliefs as their traditional way of life faces an irreversible transformation.

The film explores the bond between a father and son while also touching on themes of cultural identity, home, change and the process of letting go.

Speaking to Variety

, producer Rio described Angh as a deeply personal project. She said the team made the film with great affection for the place she comes from, its people and its culture. She also highlighted the father-son relationship at the heart of the story and the film’s exploration of home and the temporary nature of life.

Anurag Kashyap Praises the Film

Following the TIFF announcement, filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap congratulated the team behind Angh

on Instagram. He celebrated the film’s Platform Award win and its pathway to the Academy Awards’ International Feature Film category.

The makers of Angh also expressed their excitement over the achievement, calling the TIFF recognition a historic moment for Indian cinema and an important milestone for an Indigenous filmmaker.

The film has been produced by Nancy Nisa Beso and Rio, while Gaurav Dhingra, founder of Jungle Book Studios, is serving as executive producer.

Gondhal Is India’s Official Oscar 2027 Entry

Meanwhile, Marathi thriller Gondhal

has been selected as India’s official entry for the 99th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

Written and directed by Santosh Davakhar, the film is set in rural Maharashtra and follows a traditional folk performance and Gondhal ritual unfolding during a tense single night.

Interestingly, Angh was among the 33 films considered for India’s Oscar submission.

The 99th Academy Awards, or Oscars 2027, are scheduled to take place on March 14, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
