Women With Type 2 Diabetes Face Elevated Mental Health Risks

According to the study's findings, the progression and timing of health complications following a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis vary significantly by gender. Researchers discovered that women are considerably more vulnerable to mental health challenges after being diagnosed, whereas men face a heightened risk of developing severe physical complications.

Published in the esteemed medical journal PLoS Medicine, the study was spearheaded by researchers at Queen Mary University of the UK alongside international colleagues. The team conducted an in-depth analysis of health records belonging to approximately 28,720 patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes between 2010 and 2020. The data revealed that 39 percent of participants experienced at least one major health event in the years following their diagnosis, with clear gender-based divergence in disease trajectories.

Cardiovascular and Renal Complications Higher in Men

The comparative analysis highlighted distinct patterns in post-diagnosis complications between male and female patients:

  • Risks for Women: Women showed a significantly higher likelihood of developing mental health problems post-diagnosis (8.1 percent compared to 5.3 percent in men) and experienced conditions that ultimately contributed to mortality.
