For actor Nitin Mahesh Joshi , every role has offered an opportunity to explore a different facet of himself. “From playing a desi servant to a lawyer, and now a government official in my upcoming project, every role has helped me grow as an actor and pushed me to explore different facets of myself,” he says. “Being a sensitive person, I love exploring complex emotions through my work.”

Playing Raja Bhaiya left a deep emotional impact on him. “The trauma he experiences left me feeling numb even beyond the set. I’d heard about characters affecting actors deeply, but experiencing it myself was eye-opening,” he says, adding that learning to detach from a character’s emotional world takes both experience and conscious effort. His role as Maqbool in Haq also remains close to his heart, particularly the character’s desire to see Bano win despite his professional loyalties.

Kolkata, where Joshi grew up and completed his schooling, holds some of his fondest memories. “My fondest memories include playing cricket with friends on my terrace, walking to Salt Lake City Centre to watch films, and the puchka wala outside my lane who still remembers me!”

His dream of becoming an actor took shape in Class 7, when he would recite Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic dialogue from Om Shanti Om during school assemblies. “My friends would listen as though I were already on stage. Their belief in me has stayed with me.”

A regular pandal-hopper, Joshi counts Shreebhumi among his favourites. “The lights, the celebrations and the magic of Pujo are woven into my childhood.”
