Vastu Guidelines for Salt, Turmeric, and Rice: In Hindu tradition, the kitchen is not merely a place for preparing food; it is also considered the abode of Goddess Annapurna. The ingredients and items we use daily in the kitchen possess unique, divine energies that provide vitality to the members of the household. Vastu expert Prashant explains that salt, turmeric, and rice are revered as manifestations of Goddess Mahalakshmi and as symbols of the 'Ashta Devis' (eight goddesses).

Since ancient times, there has been a tradition of bringing these three items into a new home first upon moving in. Prashant notes that errors regarding the placement of these items in the kitchen, the types of containers used, or how they are handled can lead to various problems. Let us explore, through the lens of Vastu, where to keep salt, turmeric, and rice in the kitchen.

Salt, derived from the sea, is considered a manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi. It possesses an extraordinary ability to absorb negative energy from its surroundings. According to Vastu, placing the salt container in the southwest or west direction of the kitchen is highly auspicious. Under no circumstances should salt be stored in iron, steel, or plastic containers, as this can exacerbate 'Rahu Dosha' (a negative astrological influence). Salt should only be kept in a clean glass jar or an earthenware (clay) pot.

In Sanatan Dharma, turmeric is regarded as an auspicious substance, symbolizing both the planet Jupiter (Brihaspati) and Goddess Lakshmi. The container for turmeric should be placed in the north or northeast direction of the kitchen; keeping it here facilitates the flow of positive energy. It is important to ensure that the turmeric container is never left empty—fresh turmeric should be added while a small amount remains. Storing turmeric in glass jars, or in brass or copper vessels, is also believed to help expedite the occurrence of auspicious events within the home.

Rice is considered a symbol of Goddess Annapurna and is also associated with the Moon. Sacks or large drums of rice brought into the home should be placed in the southwest or west section of the kitchen. Since these directions signify stability, storing wheat and rice here ensures that there is never a shortage of food or wealth. However, ensure that the containers used for storing rice are placed on a wooden plank rather than directly on the floor. Smaller containers used for daily cooking needs may be kept in the east or north.

Containers holding salt, turmeric, or rice should never be left empty. They should be replenished before they run out. According to Vastu Shastra, allowing these containers to become entirely empty can lead to poverty. There should always be at least two or three handfuls of rice in the rice container. Similarly, placing a clove in the salt container and a small silver coin or a one-rupee coin in the turmeric container is believed to attract wealth.

Giving away or donating salt, turmeric, or rice after sunset is considered inauspicious. It is a common belief that doing so may cause Goddess Lakshmi to leave the household. If you must give these items away, do so during the day. Vastu Shastra suggests that giving away rice, turmeric, or salt in the evening is akin to handing over one’s own prosperity (Lakshmi) to another person.

According to Vastu, salt, turmeric, and rice should always be removed from their containers using a spoon or a ladle; never use your bare hands. Treating these three essential daily items as sacred and storing them systematically in the appropriate directions fosters peace and harmony within the family. Following these Vastu guidelines helps dispel negative energy, brings prosperity and auspicious qualities to the home, and promotes longevity.
