Postpartum Depression and Psychosis: How Severe Can Mental Health Struggles Become After Childbirth?

The case of Lindsay Clancy, who was accused of killing her three children in 2023, brought worldwide attention to the severe mental health challenges that can sometimes occur after childbirth. Clancy's husband returned home to find their five-year-old daughter Cora, three-year-old son Dawson and eight-month-old son Callen dead. She was accused of strangling the children before jumping from a second-story window, an incident that left her with severe spinal injuries and paralysis.

During the legal proceedings, her defense argued that she had been experiencing postpartum psychosis and other serious mental health problems that affected her understanding of her actions.

The case is extremely disturbing, but it also highlights an important issue: postpartum mental health problems can sometimes become severe and should never be dismissed as ordinary stress or mood swings.
