Pahlaj Nihalani: A Cinematic Journey Comes to an End

Renowned film producer and former chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Pahlaj Nihalani, has passed away at the age of 76 at his home in Mumbai. He had been battling liver cirrhosis.


Sources indicate that his final rites will take place today at 3 pm at a crematorium in Santa Cruz. A statement from his family expressed, “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear Pahlaj Nihalani on June 4, 2026. The cremation will occur at 3 pm today at the Santacruz Hindu Crematorium. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers as we say our last goodbyes.”

Nihalani was a prominent figure in the Hindi film industry for many years, known for his work as a producer and his role as the former CBFC chairman. He embarked on his production career in the early 1980s, debuting with the film Haathkadi in 1982, followed by Aandhi-Toofan in 1985. His significant contribution came in 1986 with the production of Ilzaam, which marked the acting debut of Govinda. The following year, he produced Aag Hi Aag, introducing Chunky Pandey to Hindi cinema.


Throughout his career, Nihalani produced numerous commercial hits, including Gunahon Ka Faisla, Paap Ki Duniya, Mitti Aur Sona, Shola Aur Shabnam, and Aankhen. He also dedicated nearly thirty years to the Association of Pictures and TV Programme Producers before stepping down in 2009. His tenure as CBFC chief ended on August 11, 2017, when Prasoon Joshi succeeded him.


Known for his outspoken views on film censorship and controversial releases, Nihalani became a notable figure during his time at the CBFC. He is survived by his wife Nita and their three sons: Deepesh, Vishal, and Chirag.
