Tired of packing the same old aloo-gobhi paratha for your kids' lunchbox? Give it a tasty and healthier twist with Sattu Paratha—a protein-packed, fiber-rich alternative that’s super easy to make and keeps kids full for longer. Plus, it’s delicious enough to come back with an empty tiffin!
Why Sattu Paratha ?
Sattu (roasted Bengal gram flour) is a powerhouse of nutrients—high in protein, energy-boosting, and gentle on digestion. Unlike heavy aloo-gobhi parathas, sattu paratha is light but satisfying, making it perfect for an active school day.
Ingredients for the Filling:
1 cup sattu (roasted chana flour)
1 tbsp mustard oil (for that authentic flavor)
1 tsp lemon juice
1 green chili (finely chopped)
1 small onion (finely chopped) – optional for kids
1 tbsp coriander leaves (chopped)
1/2 tsp ajwain (carom seeds)
Salt to taste
Water – as needed for mixing
Ingredients for the Dough:
2 cups whole wheat flour
Water – to knead
Pinch of salt
Ghee or oil – for roasting
How to Make It:
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
Mix whole wheat flour, salt, and water to form a soft dough. Let it rest for 10–15 minutes.
Step 2: Make the Filling
In a bowl, mix sattu, mustard oil, lemon juice, chili, ajwain, onion (if using), coriander, and salt. Add a few spoons of water to make a crumbly yet moist mixture.
Step 3: Stuff & Roll
Take a small ball of dough, roll it slightly, stuff with the sattu filling, seal the edges, and roll gently into a flat paratha.
Step 4: Cook It Right
Cook the paratha on a hot tawa with ghee or oil until both sides are golden brown and crisp.
Pack It with Love: Pair it with a small box of cucumber sticks or curd dip. Add a tiny piece of jaggery or a fruit on the side to balance the meal.
Tip for Fussy Eaters: Skip onions and green chilies for younger kids. Instead, add a pinch of jeera powder and a dash of ghee in the filling to mellow the flavor.
Switch to sattu parathas this week and watch your child’s tiffin come back clean! It’s wholesome, tasty, and a smart lunchbox win!
