Summer Watermelon Safety: How to Identify Naturally Ripened & Safe Melons

Newspoint
Summer in India brings a flood of fresh fruits, and watermelons are a must-have to stay cool and hydrated. Packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and natural sweetness, a juicy watermelon is a summer favourite. But with rising demand, the risk of artificial ripening and adulteration has grown. Here’s how to check if your watermelon is safe and naturally ripened.

1. Check the Colour and Surface Pattern

A naturally ripened watermelon usually has a deep green skin with distinct stripes or spots. Avoid fruits that look overly shiny or unnaturally bright, as they may have been waxed or painted to appear fresh. A dull, uniform shine often indicates a genuine, naturally grown melon.

2. Look for the Field Spot

Turn the watermelon over and inspect the underside. The field spot, where the fruit rested on the ground while ripening, should be creamy yellow or orange. A deep yellow patch indicates natural ripening. If the spot is white or absent, it may suggest premature harvesting or chemical treatment.

3. Perform the Tap Test

Gently tap the watermelon with your fingers. A ripe, natural watermelon produces a deep, hollow sound, signaling juiciness inside. A dull thud may indicate overripe or artificially filled fruit. This simple test is an easy way to gauge freshness before buying.

4. Inspect for Cracks or Injection Marks

Examine the base and stem area closely. Tiny pinholes, needle marks, or small cracks are warning signs that chemicals or sweeteners may have been injected into the fruit. Natural watermelons should have smooth, unblemished skin without any suspicious marks.

5. Try the Water Test

Cut a small piece of the red flesh and drop it into a glass of water. If the water quickly turns pink or red, it could mean synthetic dyes were used, which are unsafe for consumption. Natural watermelons do not release colour into water so rapidly.

Stay Safe and Enjoy Summer Fruits

Choosing a naturally ripened watermelon ensures safety and preserves its nutritional benefits. By following these simple checks – from colour and field spots to the tap and water tests – you can enjoy a juicy, refreshing watermelon without worry.
