Acclaimed Bollywood filmmaker and 'Gangs of Wasseypur' director Anurag Kashyap finds himself in serious legal trouble after a local court in Surat, Gujarat, issued an official warrant against him. The judicial directive comes in connection with a criminal complaint filed over derogatory remarks and controversial online posts directed against the Brahmin community.
Despite multiple prior summonses and public notices served by the court requiring his presence for questioning, the director failed to make an appearance or submit an official representation, prompting the judiciary to escalate legal measures to secure his deposition.Repeated Absence Triggers Warrant: Director Ordered to Appear on December 24The legal proceedings were set in motion following a formal petition filed by Surat-based advocate Kamlesh Rawal, who sought judicial intervention against Kashyap's inflammatory digital remarks.
The trial court had previously issued several summonses to ensure the filmmaker's participation in the legal process. To guarantee formal delivery, the summons was also executed through an official public notice published in a leading Mumbai daily on September 5. With Kashyap failing to furnish any formal clarification or appear in person before the bench, the court issued a warrant compelling him to stand before the magistrate on December 24.The Controversy: Online Backlash, Heated Exchanges, and Public ApologyThe case traces back to April 2025, when Kashyap posted contentious remarks concerning Brahmins and the Brahmin community on his social media platform, triggering massive public outrage and intense digital protests.
The backlash intensified after the director allegedly engaged in abusive exchanges with netizens who raised objections to his statements instead of taking down the post. While Kashyap later issued an apology acknowledging that his emotions had led him to overstep acceptable boundaries in anger, several community members and legal representatives pursued formal police complaints and private court petitions in multiple jurisdictions, culminating in the current judicial action by the Surat court.
