Thaimaman Scheme: 'Vijay Government' to put gold rings on 1.28 lakh children on September 28..
On the upcoming 28th, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu will launch the 'Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam' (Maternal Uncle's Gold Ring Scheme). Under this scheme, infants born in government hospitals across the state will be gifted a one-gram gold ring. The gold ring scheme was originally scheduled to launch on September 15, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai; however, it was postponed due to the Chief Minister's visit to the UK. According to reports, the Tamil Nadu government will distribute 1.28 lakh gold rings in the first phase of the scheme.
**Over 7 lakh babies born in Tamil Nadu annually**
Under the 'Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram' scheme, every child born in a government hospital from June 22 onwards will receive a one-gram gold ring. A government order regarding this initiative was issued on June 23.
According to a press release, 7.8 lakh babies are born in Tamil Nadu every year. Of these, 4.20 lakh (53%) deliveries take place in government hospitals. For the first phase of the scheme, 1,28,000 gold rings have been procured.
**Who is eligible for this scheme? ****
Mothers who are permanent residents of Tamil Nadu and have obtained an RCH ID by registering with the Pregnancy and Child Tracking (PICME) system will be eligible for this benefit. Starting September 28, babies born in government hospitals will receive the gold ring at the time of discharge.
**What are the features of the gold ring?**
The gold ring will bear a unique serial number, and its packaging will be designed to prevent easy tampering or alteration. Under this scheme, gold rings will be distributed to 100 babies daily across 107 hub centers for children born from June 22, 2026, onwards.
