Udaipur , famously known as the 'City of Lakes,' celebrated for its captivating natural beauty, historical heritage, and splendid water bodies, is on the verge of clinching the prestigious title of India's inaugural wetland city . This enchanting city, with its iconic lakes such as Lake Pichola, Lake Fateh Sagar, Lake Doodh Talai, Lake Rang Sagar, and Lake Swaroop Sagar, has long been a magnet for tourists.
According to a report, the Rajasthan government is actively pursuing this recognition for Udaipur. The Environment and Forest Department has singled out Udaipur based on the criteria outlined by the Ramsar Convention, which acknowledges sites of international importance. Furthermore, Udaipur is actively participating in the National Lakes Conservation Plan, a central government initiative aimed at reviving these vital water bodies. The city's nomination is currently in the process of submission to the Ramsar Convention for approval.
At present, there are 42 designated wetland cities worldwide. In India, Udaipur and Bhopal are both contenders for the esteemed distinction of being recognized as India's premier wetland city.
Several stringent criteria and crucial prerequisites must be met to attain this esteemed designation, and Udaipur proudly boasts all the essential attributes. These internationally acknowledged wetlands must exhibit uniqueness within their specific biogeographic region and play a pivotal role in safeguarding endangered and vulnerable species.
