Up All Night? Managing Frequent Bathroom Trips in the Third Trimester

Newspoint
Right when you need more rest, the third trimester can bring a new daily ritual of getting up all the time to visit the washroom. This leaves you tired, wondering if you will ever be able to get a good night's sleep before giving birth to your child.

We had a conversation with Dr Swetha S. Reddy, Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, SPARSH Hospital, Bengaluru, to get to know more about this.

Why Do You Need to Pee So Often During the Third Trimester?According to Dr Reddy, peeing frequently is one of the most common complaints that arise during the third trimester. The baby's growth causes the uterus to exert pressure on the bladder, making it feel smaller in size. Hormonal changes and the extra blood flow through your kidneys make you need to visit the bathroom more often, particularly at night.

It should also be mentioned that many women have this issue at the very beginning of their pregnancy, after which the situation somewhat improves during the second trimester. In the third trimester, you feel a more significant pressure on your bladder just because your baby is bigger.

Reasons Why You Need to Avoid Water RestrictionYou may have thought about restricting your water intake in order to cut down on visits to the toilet, but according to Dr Reddy, this is the wrong step to take. Do not cut back on the amount of water that you consume since it is important that both you and your baby get the water that you need.

Instead, increase your fluid consumption early during the day while consuming small amounts just two hours before bedtime.

Practical Steps for Handling Nighttime UrinationsAccording to Dr Reddy, some useful tips can really assist in alleviating the stress caused by this problem:

  • Empty the bladder every time using the technique of leaning slightly forward while urinating, which helps in emptying it thoroughly and reduces the chances of feeling the urge very soon after.
  • Stay away from any caffeinated beverages in the evening, as they tend to stimulate the production of urine and affect your sleep even more.
  • Create a clear pathway to the bathroom in the evening, making each visit less disruptive for your sleep.
All these small changes will not stop nighttime urination entirely, but will make it less frequent and less disruptive.

When Frequent Urination Indicates a Possible UTI?"If there is a burning sensation, fever, presence of blood in the urine, or pain in the pelvis along with frequent urination, you should consult your doctor right away, since these could be possible indicators of a UTI."

Dr Swetha S Reddy, Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, SPARSH Hospital, Bengaluru

This is because regular pregnancy-associated frequent urination is often confused with a UTI due to the similarities between the two; however, the two conditions are entirely distinct from one another and require completely different handling. A UTI requires immediate medical intervention, especially during pregnancy.

When to Consult Your DoctorIf you experience any of the following conditions along with frequent urination, make sure you consult your doctor as soon as possible:

  • Painful urination
  • Fever
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pelvic pain
  • Discoloured or foul-smelling urine
  • Urgent need to urinate that is not part of your normal routine
This can help your doctor determine if you have developed a urinary tract infection and begin treatment if necessary.

Frequent urination is temporary and will improve after delivery. It is important to stay well hydrated, to listen to what your body tells you, and discuss all peculiar symptoms with your doctor to ensure that you have a healthy pregnancy.

Remember, although it may be very exhausting to go to the bathroom so often, this problem will disappear when your baby is born.

FAQs on Up All Night? Managing Frequent Bathroom Trips in the Third Trimester
  • Does the need to urinate frequently mean that my baby is growing or positioning for birth?

This could very well be the case because as your baby lowers itself into your pelvis and the pressure on your bladder increases, there will be more frequent urges to pee.
  • Will pelvic floor exercises ease my frequent urges to urinate?

  • These exercises are actually good for your health while you are pregnant, but your baby will still exert pressure on your bladder no matter how many you do.
  • Is it normal to have the urge to urinate more frequently suddenly worsen during the last few weeks of pregnancy?

Yes, it is perfectly normal because as your baby descends deeper into your pelvis in preparation for birth, there will be added pressure on your bladder.
