Visakhapatnam Enters Global Cruise Map: First International Departure Announced

Newspoint
For decades, India’s international cruise journeys have largely started from the west coast, especially cities like Mumbai. That pattern is finally changing. Visakhapatnam is now set to emerge as a new international cruise departure hub, marking a major milestone for India’s eastern coastline.

Starting July 15, the city will host its first international cruise service, opening up a completely new route for Indian travellers. The cruise, operated by Cordelia Cruises, will offer a 14-day journey covering multiple destinations across Southeast Asia.

The itinerary itself signals the scale of this shift. Passengers will begin their journey from Visakhapatnam, stop at Chennai for a short stay, and then sail to international destinations like Phuket, Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore.

This is not just about adding a new travel option. It represents a structural change in how cruise tourism is developing in India.

Until now, international cruise departures have been concentrated in western ports. For travellers in eastern and southern India, this often meant additional travel just to board a cruise. With Visakhapatnam entering the picture, that barrier reduces significantly.

The move is also backed by infrastructure. The Visakhapatnam International Cruise Terminal, operational since 2023, has been designed with facilities similar to global standards. From immigration counters to lounges and baggage systems, the terminal is built to handle international cruise passengers efficiently.

Over the past few years, the port has already been building momentum. It has hosted luxury cruise ships and handled thousands of passengers, gradually positioning itself as a viable cruise destination.

What changes now is its role. From being a stop on cruise routes, Visakhapatnam is becoming a starting point.

There are clear economic implications as well. Cruise tourism tends to bring high-spending travellers, boosting local hospitality, transport, and retail sectors. For Andhra Pradesh, this could mean a stronger tourism economy centred around coastal experiences.

There is also a strategic angle. Expanding cruise operations to the east coast helps balance India’s maritime tourism infrastructure, reducing dependence on a few ports and spreading growth more evenly.

For travellers, the appeal is straightforward. A cruise from Visakhapatnam offers a different kind of journey, one that begins closer to home for many and connects directly to international destinations without the need for flights.

In simple terms, this is more than just a new route.

It is a shift in geography, access, and opportunity. As cruise tourism grows globally, India’s east coast is finally stepping into the conversation. And Visakhapatnam is leading that entry.
