What Are Functional Foods and Why Are They Becoming So Popular?

The phrase "functional food" sounds highly technical, but the basic idea is surprisingly simple. It refers to foods that are associated with benefits beyond providing calories and basic nutrients. Yoghurts containing live cultures, foods fortified with vitamins, fibre-rich products and some omega-3 enriched foods are examples of the wider category. The growing interest reflects a change in how people approach health. Instead of thinking about nutrition only in terms of meals and diets, consumers increasingly want ordinary foods to serve a purpose. Breakfast, snacks and drinks are being judged not only by taste, but also by what they might contribute to everyday wellbeing.
