What did Maruti do in collaboration with the Railways that set a record? A nine-fold increase since 2014..
Maruti Suzuki, the country's largest passenger vehicle manufacturer, has set a major record in collaboration with Indian Railways. The company has completed the delivery of over 3 million vehicles via the railway network. This achievement is not merely limited to sales or supply; it is also being hailed as a prime example of India's rapidly expanding green logistics model. According to the company, the pace of vehicle transportation via railways has witnessed a tremendous surge over the past decade. In the financial year 2014-15, the share of railways in the company's total vehicle dispatches stood at a mere 5 percent; this figure has now risen to reach 26.5 percent in 2025-26. In other words, rail-based freight transportation has witnessed an approximately nine-fold increase since 2014.
Maruti Suzuki revealed that the journey from delivering 2 million to 3 million vehicles by rail was accomplished in a span of just 21 months. This marks the first time in the company's history that the transportation of an additional 1 million vehicles via railways has been executed with such remarkable speed. Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, the company's Managing Director and CEO, stated that this achievement constitutes a pivotal component of Maruti Suzuki's green logistics strategy. He emphasized that rail-based transportation leads to reduced carbon emissions, conserves fuel, and alleviates traffic congestion on roads.
**Significant Benefits Derived from the PM Gati Shakti Scheme**
Maruti Suzuki also lauded the Central Government's 'PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.' The company asserts that this scheme has played a pivotal role in strengthening multimodal logistics, thereby making it easier for industries to adopt rail-based freight transportation. The company has pledged to invest over ₹13,720 million towards green logistics infrastructure. Furthermore, an in-plant railway siding facility is set to be established at the company's upcoming manufacturing plant in Kharkhoda, Haryana. Railway Sidings Already in Place at Two Plants
Maruti Suzuki is currently the country's first and only passenger vehicle manufacturer to possess railway siding facilities at two of its manufacturing plants. These include the Hansalpur plant in Gujarat and the Manesar plant in Haryana. The combined annual dispatch capacity of these two facilities stands at 750,000 vehicles. Through a network of 22 hubs, the company's rail network currently delivers vehicles to over 600 cities across the country.
Ambitious Goal for 2030
Maruti Suzuki is now gearing up to accelerate its railway-based vehicle dispatch operations even further. The company has set a target to increase the share of railways in its total vehicle transportation to 35 percent by the financial year 2030–31. Industry experts believe that this initiative will not only reduce the company's logistics costs but also have a positive impact on the environment.
