Formerly known as the United Provinces , the name was changed on 24 January 1950, just before India became a republic, giving the state a meaningful Indian identity.

Historical Names of Uttar Pradesh

The region now called Uttar Pradesh has had multiple names throughout history:
  • Ancient Period: Parts were known as Kosala and Panchala, famous kingdoms in Indian epics and history.
  • Delhi Sultanate & Mughal Era: The region came under the Subah of Awadh (Oudh), with cities like Jaunpur developing during the Delhi Sultanate.
  • British Period:
    • 1836: North-Western Provinces
    • 1877: North-Western Provinces and Oudh
    • 1902: United Provinces of Agra and Oudh
    • 1937: United Provinces

After independence, leaders wanted to replace colonial-era names with ones that reflected Indian heritage and language.

Why the Name Uttar Pradesh?

The term “Uttar Pradesh” translates to “Northern Province” in Hindi, giving the state both a geographical and cultural identity. The renaming replaced the generic and colonial United Provinces, strengthening the state’s sense of pride and local significance.

  • Uttar Pradesh Day : Celebrated annually on 24 January to commemorate the renaming and celebrate state culture.
  • States Reorganisation Act , 1956: Uttar Pradesh underwent administrative changes based on language but largely retained its boundaries.
  • Division in 2000: Thirteen hilly districts were carved out to form Uttaranchal, later renamed Uttarakhand in 2006, leaving Uttar Pradesh primarily as a plains and plateau state.

Today, Uttar Pradesh stands as a symbol of historical transformation, reflecting India’s journey from colonial rule to cultural self-assertion. Its renaming was not just administrative but it was a reclamation of identity.
