Why Did Lord Shiva Save the Moon From Daksha's Curse?

Newspoint
What if the Moon’s changing light was once explained through a curse that even the gods could not remove? An ancient Hindu legend connects this mystery to Lord Shiva, a neglected promise and a desperate prayer made beside the sea. At the heart of the story stands Somnath, one of the twelve revered Jyotirlingas, where the Moon is believed to have regained the light he was destined to lose.

The Moon Had 27 Wives
Newspoint
Chandra Dev is believed to have married the 27 daughters of Prajapati Daksha, each associated with a lunar constellation.
According to Hindu mythology, Chandra Dev, the Moon god, married the 27 daughters of Prajapati Daksha. These daughters are associated with the 27 nakshatras, or lunar constellations, used in Hindu astrology. Each wife had a special place in the story, but Chandra Dev was especially attached to Rohini. He spent most of his time with her, leaving his other wives feeling ignored. What began as a personal preference soon became a family conflict, setting the stage for a curse that would change the Moon’s fate.

Daksha’s Warning Went Unheard
Newspoint
Devotees worship Lord Shiva during the sacred twilight period of Pradosh Kaal.
Tired of being neglected, Chandra Dev’s other wives approached their father, Daksha, and explained their unhappiness. Daksha called upon his son-in-law and urged him to give every wife equal respect and attention. However, Chandra Dev continued to favour Rohini. In the legend, this refusal was more than a domestic disagreement. It represented a failure to honour a commitment made to others. When repeated advice brought no change, Daksha decided to punish Chandra Dev, turning a family grievance into a cosmic crisis.

The Curse Made the Moon FadeDaksha cursed Chandra Dev, declaring that his radiance would gradually diminish. As the curse took effect, the Moon began losing the brightness that defined him. Worried by his fading light, Chandra Dev sought help from the gods, hoping they could free him from the punishment. But even the gods could not simply undo Daksha’s curse. With his power slipping away, Chandra Dev needed another solution. The answer, he was told, lay at Prabhas, a sacred place where he could seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.

Chandra Dev Turns to Lord ShivaFollowing the advice he received, Chandra Dev travelled to Prabhas, near the sea, and established a Shiva lingam. He devoted himself to Lord Shiva through prayer and worship, asking for relief from Daksha’s curse. The legend describes six months of intense devotion before Shiva appeared before him. Chandra Dev did not ask for power over others or revenge against Daksha. He sought a way to survive the curse and regain his lost radiance. His prayers led to a blessing that would shape the story of Somnath for generations.

Shiva Offers a Different SolutionLord Shiva granted Chandra Dev a unique blessing. The curse would not disappear entirely, but its effects would change. The Moon’s brightness would decrease during one half of the lunar cycle and increase during the other. This meant Chandra Dev would not remain trapped in permanent darkness. He would gradually lose his light, then regain it until he became full again. The legend connects this divine blessing with the Moon’s waxing and waning, turning a punishment into a recurring cycle of loss and renewal.

Why Is the Temple Called Somnath? After receiving Shiva’s blessing, Chandra Dev and the other gods asked the Lord to remain at Prabhas. Shiva agreed to stay there in the form of a Jyotirlinga, making the place sacred to his devotees. Chandra Dev is also known as Soma, while Nath means lord or protector. This is why the name Somnath means “Lord of Soma,” or “Lord of the Moon.” The temple’s traditional origin story connects the Moon’s devotion with one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in Hinduism.

The Deeper Meaning Behind the LegendThe story of Somnath is not only about a curse or the changing appearance of the Moon. It also explores responsibility, the consequences of neglect and the possibility of renewal. Chandra Dev’s mistake brought suffering, while his devotion helped him find a way forward. Lord Shiva’s blessing did not erase every consequence; it offered a path through them. For devotees, this makes the legend a reminder that difficult phases need not last forever. Just as the Moon regains its fullness, life can move from loss towards hope.
