Why Owning Dogs Or Cats Could Boost Your Brain Health As You Age

As we age, maintaining mental sharpness becomes increasingly important. Now, a new study has found that having a dog or cat at home could do more than just lift your mood—it might also slow down cognitive decline.

Pets and the Ageing Brain: What the Study Reveals

Researchers from the University of Geneva, led by Adriana Rostekova, analysed data from the Survey of Health and Retirement in Europe, spanning 18 years and involving adults aged 50 and above. Their findings, published in Scientific Reports, reveal that owning a dog or cat is associated with slower mental deterioration over time.

Dog or Cat? Each Offers Unique Mental Benefits

According to the study:

  • Dog owners exhibited better memory, both in terms of immediate recall and delayed memory.
  • Cat owners, on the other hand, showed slower decline in verbal fluency, a key component of cognitive ability.

These differences point to the distinct ways dogs and cats engage with their owners, offering unique forms of cognitive stimulation.

Not All Pets Are Equal

The research also looked at ownership of birds and fish, but found no significant mental health benefits associated with these pets. Rostekova suggested that this might be due to the shorter lifespans of fish and birds, as well as the limited emotional interaction they offer compared to dogs and cats.

Why Dogs and Cats Make a Difference

Unlike fish or birds, dogs and cats encourage routine, emotional bonding, and in the case of dogs—physical activity like walking. These factors may contribute to enhanced cognitive engagement, making them more beneficial for long-term brain health.

In addition, daily interactions with these pets—feeding, grooming, playing, and communicating—could provide subtle but regular mental stimulation, which acts like exercise for the brain.

While pets are widely known for their emotional support, this study sheds light on their potential cognitive benefits too. If you're looking for a companion that not only offers love and comfort but may also help keep your mind sharper as you age, a dog or cat might be the perfect choice.
