Why We Have Different Versions of Ourselves for Friends, Family and Partners

You may be confident with your friends, responsible with your family and surprisingly vulnerable with your partner. Sometimes these differences are so obvious that they can make you wonder which version is actually the “real” you. The answer is more complicated than simply choosing one. Human identity is deeply connected to relationships. The people closest to us become part of the mental map through which we understand ourselves. Psychology calls some of these context-dependent identities the “relational self”, and research suggests they can influence behaviour, emotions and even self-evaluation.
