Why Your Skin Can Feel Dry Even When You Drink Plenty of Water

It is easy to assume that dry skin must mean you are not drinking enough water. After all, water is essential for the body. Yet someone can drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and still wake up with tight, flaky or uncomfortable skin. The reason is that skin hydration is not simply a matter of how much water you drink. The outermost layer of the skin acts as a protective barrier, helping prevent excessive water loss. When that barrier is damaged or exposed to harsh conditions, moisture can escape more quickly. Everyday habits, weather, skincare products and certain medical conditions can all play a role.
