Have gold and silver become cheaper?

Domestic market prices for gold and silver fell last week. On the MCX, the price of gold dropped by Rs 3,581—a decline of 2.4%—to settle at approximately Rs 1.47 lakh per 10 grams.

Silver saw an even sharper decline, falling by Rs 14,568—or 6.4%—to close at around Rs 2.11 lakh per kilogram. This drop was driven by factors such as the strengthening of the rupee, uncertainty regarding interest rates, and shifting conditions in global markets.

Why did gold become cheaper in

India?

A major reason for the decline in gold prices was the strengthening of the Indian rupee. A strengthening rupee reduces the cost of importing gold from abroad, which in turn impacts prices in the domestic market.

According to analysts, the rupee strengthened from the 96.8 level to 94.8 over five trading sessions—an appreciation of more than 180 paise. As a result, the price of gold in the domestic market fell by over ₹3,000 per 10 grams across four trading sessions. Gold in India became cheaper even more significantly than the decline seen in international markets.

Why does silver experience greater volatility?

Last week, the price of silver saw a sharper decline compared to gold. This is because silver is used not only for investment purposes but also in various business and industrial applications. Consequently, concerns regarding economic growth tend to have a more pronounced impact on the demand for—and the price of—silver.
