ZNMD 2: What happened to the trio after that Spain road trip?

Fifteen years after Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara took Arjun, Kabir and Imran on that unforgettable road trip across Spain, Zoya Akhtar has finally given fans a real reason to believe that their story may continue. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, Zoya confirmed that she is working on ZNMD 2 with Reema Kagti, saying, “We are on it.” At the same time, she made it clear that the sequel will only move forward if they find the right story for these characters today.

That is perhaps what makes the update more interesting than just the possibility of seeing Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol together again. Could ZNMD 2 take a route similar to the curiosity surrounding 3 Idiots and show us what happened to its central trio many years after we last saw them? In 3 Idiots, the fascination has always been about where Rancho, Farhan and Raju ended up after college. ZNMD has an equally interesting question waiting to be answered.

When we met Arjun, Kabir and Imran, they were already adults with careers, relationships, ambitions and plenty of personal baggage. Their Spain trip changed each of them in different ways. Arjun began questioning his work obsessed life, Kabir had to confront the choices being made around his marriage and Imran finally started facing questions he had carried for years. Fifteen years later, the obvious question is whether those lessons actually stayed with them.

That could give ZNMD 2 a far more interesting story than simply sending the three friends on another holiday. What happened to their careers? Did their relationships work out? Did Arjun really learn to live beyond work? Did Kabir find the life he wanted? Did Imran remain the free spirit we remember? And perhaps most importantly, what happened to the friendship that brought them together in the first place?

The 2025 advertisement featuring Hrithik, Farhan and Abhay as their ZNMD characters had already shown how much affection audiences still have for the trio. Many fans initially mistook the reunion for a sequel announcement, underlining just how much interest there still is in these characters. Now, Zoya has confirmed that the idea is genuinely being worked on, although there is still no release date, shooting schedule or official confirmation that the original trio has signed on.

The fifteen year gap could actually be the biggest advantage for the sequel. These are not the same three men anymore, and Zoya does not necessarily have to recreate the first film to bring back its spirit. The more compelling story may simply be about discovering who these friends became after they returned from Spain and whether the life lessons they learnt there survived the realities of growing older.

That could be the real reason for fans to get excited about ZNMD 2. Not just another road trip, but a chance to find out what happened to Arjun, Kabir and Imran after we stopped watching them.
