Former CM vs Current CM: Puducherry's Most Watched Constituency
The assembly elections in Puducherry has taken an interesting turn. This year on Thattanchavady seat there is a direct clash between between current Chief Minister, N Rangaswamy and the former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam.Clash Election in this union territory took place on April 9. People are now waiting for exit polls and then results. The results will be declared on May 4. As of now there are 30 seats and 3 nominated in Puducherry and among which 5 seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste. But there are seats that people are actually waiting for.Similarly there are other seats that are interesting. The major political players are AINRC . AINRC is headed by N Rangawamy.The second one is Bhartiya Janta Party and INC-DMK. All these players are ready to try their fortune in union territory. Although every seat is equally important,here are a few seats that have drawn extra attention.
1.Thattanchavady
One of the most powerful constituencies with the direct competition between the current Chief Minister, N Rangaswamy and the former Chief Minister V Vaithilingam. Often called the Chief Minister’s constituency, this seat is believed to be representing the political mood of the union territory. It is the 9th constituency seat of Puducherry. It is a General seat . As per the reports there are almost 30,000 electors this year. The major candidates are Rangaswamy, V Vaithilingam and Karthiga Kumari. In the past which means in the 2022 election Rangaswamy (AINRC) won this seat.
2. Indira Nagar
With almost 35,000 voters this is the 8th constituency of Puducherry. AINRC has a strong hold in this constituency. They have been ruling it here since 2011. The constituency often sees an intense competition between AINRC,DMK and Congress. This constituency also has a history of one of the highest voter turnout which was 77.99% in 2021. The major candidates are Devika (NTK), S. Mourounge. AKD Arumugam was the previous Member of Legislative Assembly from this constituency.
3. Yanam
Positioned with Andhra Pradesh along Godavari delta, it is an urban seat. The seat holds the history of French influence and it also serves as a bridge between various cultures. It has the full potential of deciding the kingmaker. It has given representatives like Maladi Krishna Rao , a four time winner. There are almost 18,000 voters in this constituency. In the previous election, IND won this seat with a margin of almost 17,000 votes. As of now, this year there were 37,000 registered voters in the constituency. The male and female electors are almost equal here.
4.Raj Bhavan
Known as the economic, political and administrative heart of Puducherry,Raj Bhavan is the 14th constituency in Puducherry. It is an urban seat. This constituency is a famous tourist spot and is also known for famous places like White town. The Governor also resides here. This constituency is known for its tourism and cultural significance relating to old French connection.
There was a voter turnout of almost 87.89 percent. The key candidates are VP Ramalingam( BJP), Vignesh Khannan( DMK) and R Kumaran (INC). The previous winner candidate was K Lakshminarayan with a vote margin of 10,000. As of now there are 21,000 registered voters.
These are few major seats of the Puducherry assembly elections.Although every seat plays a major role in formation of government, there are few who set the political mood for the rest of the union territory.
