As the holy month of Ramadan approaches its end, Muslim families across the country begin preparations for one of the most joyful festivals of the year. From festive meals and new clothes to special prayers and charity, the celebration of Eid depends largely on the traditional moon-sighting process.

Why the Date of Eid ul-Fitr Changes Every Year

Eid ul-Fitr, often referred to as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” marks the end of Ramadan, a sacred month during which Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. The month is devoted to prayer, charity, reflection and spiritual discipline.

The festival is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Since this calendar is based on the phases of the moon rather than the solar year, Islamic months are shorter than those in the Gregorian calendar. As a result, the date of Eid ul-Fitr shifts earlier each year.

Because of this lunar system, the exact day of Eid cannot be finalised in advance and is confirmed only after the crescent moon is sighted.

Moon Sighting and the Expected Date of Eid ul-Fitr 2026

The Islamic lunar month typically lasts 29 or 30 days. On the 29th evening of Ramadan, Muslims look for the new crescent moon that signals the start of Shawwal.

In 2026, the moon sighting will take place on the evening of March 19, a night popularly known as Chand Raat.

  • If the crescent moon is sighted on March 19, Eid ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, March 20, 2026.
  • If the moon is not visible that evening, Ramadan will complete 30 days, and Eid will be observed on Saturday, March 21, 2026.

Astronomical predictions suggest that the moon may likely be visible on March 19, making March 20 the probable date for Eid celebrations in India.

However, the final confirmation comes only after local moon-sighting committees and religious scholars officially announce the sighting after sunset.

How Moon Sighting Is Confirmed in India

In India, the confirmation of Eid relies on announcements made by religious authorities and regional moon-sighting committees. These groups observe the sky and verify reports of the crescent moon.

Major cities such as Delhi, Lucknow, Hyderabad and Mumbai often host gatherings where scholars and community members participate in the observation process. Once the moon sighting is confirmed, the official Eid date is announced and celebrations begin.

Chand Raat: The Night That Marks the Start of Eid Festivities

Chand Raat, the evening when the crescent moon becomes visible, is one of the most exciting moments leading up to Eid. The atmosphere in cities and neighbourhoods becomes lively and festive.

During Chand Raat:

  • Markets remain open late into the night
  • People buy new clothes, sweets and gifts
  • Families shop for ingredients for the Eid feast
  • Women and girls decorate their hands with mehendi
  • Homes begin preparations for the next day’s celebrations

For many families, this night is filled with anticipation, joy and last-minute preparations.

How Eid ul-Fitr Is Celebrated in India

Eid ul-Fitr is usually celebrated over three days and marks the joyous conclusion of Ramadan.

The day begins with special congregational prayers known as Salat al-Eid, offered in mosques or large open grounds. Before the prayer, Muslims give Zakat al-Fitr, a form of charity meant to help those in need so that everyone can participate in the festivities.
