WWE star and American Nightmare Cody Rhodes had a different look in his mind for his WWE comeback following WrestleMania 41, but Bruce Prichard, the producer of the show, ultimately rejected the idea.
It happened when Rhodes was absent from WWE television for several months after losing the undisputed WWE Championship to John Cena at WrestleMania 41. He eventually returned at Saturday Night's Main Event in May, targeting Cena after his time away. However, he wanted his comeback look to be very different.
He has recently revealed his idea while speaking on What Do You Want to Talk About? with Simone Johnson, where Rhodes explained that the look of a black cowboy hat had a personal connection to his family and his upbringing in Georgia, and the comeback would have seen him confront John Cena and Logan Paul.
Speaking on the show, he stated, “I was coming back at a show; I believe it was Logan Paul and John Cena in the ring, and I was jumping them after I had been away. I thought about wearing all black with a black cowboy hat. My logic in it was my dad quarter-horsed; they are from Austin. I read this dumb horse book as a kid. I’m from Georgia. I have some ownership of it."
Discussing about the creative differences, he stated, "Three out of the four guys that I speak to about everything gave me a thumbs up. It was just one who said, ‘I don’t think that’s going to work. I think that’s going to be distracting.’ The one who told me that it was going to be distracting and made the decision ultimately was Bruce Prichard.”
Rhodes also said that three of the four people he regularly consults about his ideas approved of the look. However, one person believed that the hat would take attention away from the significance of his return, and that person was Bruce Prichard.
According to Rhodes, Prichard ultimately decided against the cowboy hat because he felt it would be distracting. Rhodes later acknowledged that the decision may have been the right one, particularly because his return already involved attacking two major WWE stars.
He further joked about the creative differences, admitting that nine out of his ten ideas are bad, while emphasizing the importance of having people around him who are willing to challenge his ideas.
The former undisputed champion eventually returned to WWE TV without the cowboy hat, wearing his traditional Nightmare family tracksuit instead.
