England's Bowling Doesn't Worry Anyone; Virat Kohli and KL Rahul's Absence a Blessing: Geoffrey Boycott
Legendary batter Geoffrey Boycott didn't mince his words when critiquing England's bowling resources during their grueling five-match Test series against India. The English side endured a humbling 1-4 series defeat at the hands of India, despite the absence of key batters from the Indian lineup .
While England started with a promising victory in Hyderabad, their fortunes quickly soured as they suffered consecutive losses in the following matches.
The series unfolded as a clash between an inexperienced Indian batting lineup and England's fledgling spinners, with the hosts ultimately prevailing with a commendable display on home turf. Notably, two English bowlers - Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir - marked their international debuts during the Indian tour.
Boycott expressed his dismay over England's bowling attack , stating that the outcome of the series wasn't surprising given the lackluster performance of players like Ben Stokes .
"It wouldn’t frighten anyone: two raw kids in Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir with little first-class bowling as spinners, an ineffectual fast bowler in Mark Wood who just bangs the ball into the track with little movement, a great seamer in Anderson who was used sparingly because he is at the end of his career and an all-rounder Ben Stokes who was unfit to bowl until a bit in the last Test. No wonder it was 4-1," Boycott opined in his column for the Telegraph.
The list of top five wicket-takers was dominated by Indian players, with only one English bowler managing to secure a spot. Hartley emerged as England's leading wicket-taker with an impressive tally of 22 wickets across five matches.
Boycott further emphasised that England's luck with the absence of key Indian players like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul (post the first Test) couldn't compensate for their shortcomings on the field.
"Inexperienced kids were never going to outbowl experienced Indian spinners in India. If anyone thought that then it was daft, wishful thinking. England were lucky that Virat Kohli was unavailable for all the series and KL Rahul only played one Test," he added.
Following the series defeat, England finds themselves languishing at the eighth position in the World Test Championship points table, having managed to secure victory in just three out of their ten Tests.
