IPL 2024: MS Dhoni Hands Over Chennai Super Kings Captaincy To Ruturaj Gaikwad
Mahendra Singh Dhoni has relinquished his role as captain of Chennai Super Kings ( CSK ) with Ruturaj Gaikwad being named skipper ahead of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL).
“MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of IPL 2024 . Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season,” CSK said in a statement.
Gaikwad participated in the pre-captains photoshoot and interacted with other teams’ captains, marking his debut as captain in the tournament.
Dhoni, approaching 43 years old in July, faces mounting speculation on whether the upcoming IPL might mark his final season as a player.
Despite uncertainties surrounding his IPL availability, ‘ Thala ’ Dhoni underwent surgery in Mumbai last year and has since recovered, recently returning to the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai to prepare for the forthcoming season.
During IPL 2023, Dhoni battled through an injured knee, which hampered his mobility, often visible through his limping. Following the season's conclusion, he underwent surgery in Mumbai to address the issue.
Under Dhoni's captaincy, CSK secured their fifth IPL title last year, bringing them level with the Mumbai Indians on the list of most titles won.
Previously, MSD had hinted at wanting to conclude his tenure with the team in a memorable manner, though his specific plans remain undisclosed.
In 2022, the Super Kings entrusted the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja. However, the left-arm spinner stepped down midway through the tournament amidst a string of losses, returning the leadership role to Dhoni.
Widely regarded as one of India’s greatest captains, Dhoni led the team to victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and a Champions Trophy, in addition to guiding India to the summit of the ICC Test rankings for the first time.
