IPL 2024: Shreyas Iyer Fit To Lead Kolkata Knight Riders Despite Injury Concerns
In a positive update for Kolkata Knight Riders , their skipper Shreyas Iyer has reportedly received the green light in terms of fitness ahead of IPL 2024 . Iyer, who has been grappling with back spasms, was compelled to sideline himself from the final two days of the recent Ranji Trophy final clash between Mumbai and Vidarbha.
Nevertheless, Iyer has been cautioned against excessive stretching of his leg while executing the forward defensive shot to prevent further aggravation of the injury.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the Indian cricketer went to see a spine specialist in Mumbai. This visit was advised by the National Cricket Academy.
“He is fit to play, a specialist spine doctor was consulted in Mumbai who has advised him not to stretch his leg too forward while defending the ball. He has joined IPL franchise KKR and he can play,” a source stated, as quoted by the daily.
Iyer has been grappling with back issues since the second Test of the recent five-match series between India and England. Post the second Test in Vizag, the middle-order batsman reportedly experienced discomfort in his back after prolonged batting.
Despite Iyer's complaints of back pain, the NCA reportedly found no fitness issues, resulting in his exclusion from the Indian squad for the remaining three matches.
Directed to participate in domestic cricket, Iyer skipped Mumbai's Ranji Trophy quarter-final encounter against Baroda, subsequently missing out on a spot in the BCCI's annual contract.
However, he returned to action in the semi-final and final matches, where he notched up a fluent 95 in Mumbai's second innings before the recurrence of back pain forced him off the field for the remainder of the game.
Nevertheless, Iyer has now joined Kolkata Knight Riders' pre-season training camp ahead of IPL 2024 and participated in a practice match on Sunday, scoring 22 runs off 19 balls.
According to a report by PTI, the 29-year-old appeared to struggle against spinners and was dismissed stumped when he advanced down the track to a local spinner.
