Jay Shah Reveals Reasons Behind Rohit Sharma's Captaincy Decision For T20 World Cup
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has officially announced that Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian cricket team in the forthcoming T20 World Cup , set to be hosted by the West Indies and the USA . This decision comes in light of all-rounder Hardik Pandya 's ongoing recovery from an ankle injury sustained last October.
Speaking to the press during the renaming ceremony of the SCA Stadium after former board secretary Niranjan Shah, Jay Shah emphasized Rohit's leadership role, stating, "Rohit was captaining in the past in other formats, and he came back for the Afghanistan series, which means we were going to let him continue forward."
He further underscored the necessity of Rohit's captaincy , especially in the absence of an alternative due to Pandya's injury, saying, "If Hardik was injured in the World Cup, who else can we give the captaincy?"
"In the third T20I against Afghanistan, India were 22/4 and the way he (Rohit Sharma) took the team to 212/4, we can't question much about him, right?" he added.
Referring to India's performance in the previous ODI World Cup, Shah emphasized Rohit's leadership prowess, noting, "He (Rohit) has the ability... we won 10 games in the ODI World Cup. We didn't win the final, but it's part and parcel of the game. Whoever plays better, wins."
During the SCA Stadium renaming event, Shah rallied the support of cricketing luminaries and fans alike, expressing his confidence in Rohit's leadership to bring glory to the nation in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
"In 2023 (final) at Ahmedabad, even though we did not win the World Cup after 10 straight wins, we won hearts. I want to promise you that in 2024 (T20 World Cup) in Barbados (venue for the final), under Rohit Sharma's captaincy, ham Bharat ka jhanda gaadenge (we will hoist the Indian flag)."
The ceremony witnessed the presence of esteemed figures from Indian cricket, including former captains Sunil Gavaskar and Anil Kumble, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and head coach Rahul Dravid, alongside key players Rohit Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and members of the Indian team support staff.
