KKR Skipper Shreyas Iyer Likely To Miss Initial Matches Of IPL 2024: Reports
Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer might find himself sidelined for the opening fixtures of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, as per a report by the Times of India. The report suggests that the batsman's recurring back injury has resurfaced following his impressive 95-run innings for Mumbai during the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha.
Having undergone surgery for the same issue in 2023, this recent setback could see him missing the initial matches of IPL 2024. “It is not looking good. It is the same back injury which has got aggravated. It is unlikely he will take the field on Day 5 of the Ranji Trophy final. He is in danger of missing the initial matches of the IPL,” a source informed the Times Of India.
The IPL holds significant importance for Iyer, especially after being omitted from the BCCI's central contract list. KKR is scheduled to face Sunrisers Hyderabad in Kolkata on March 23 for their first encounter of the tournament.
During his innings of 95 runs, Iyer experienced back spasms, prompting two check-ups by the Mumbai team physiotherapist. Subsequently, he did not participate in Mumbai's fielding duties on Wednesday, with reports strongly indicating his probable exclusion from any further involvement in the Ranji Trophy final.
Iyer had previously raised concerns about this injury during the recently concluded Test series against England.
“During the recently-held Test series against England at home, he had told the Indian team management about this injury troubling him again,” the source revealed.
Contrary to these reports, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has stated that there are no new injury worries concerning Iyer.
