Banerjee said the stadium would bear Richa Ghosh’s name so that “her contribution remains in people’s hearts for generations.”

Honouring a Rising Star of Indian Women’s Cricket

On Saturday, Richa Ghosh was honoured by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and the state government at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attended the ceremony, where she personally handed Richa a gold-plated bat and ball as a token of appreciation.

In a heartfelt gesture, Banerjee also draped her own scarf around the shoulders of Richa’s mother, acknowledging the immense role her parents have played in shaping the young cricketer’s career. “Richa has made Bengal proud, and behind her success stand her parents,” the Chief Minister remarked during the event.

Recognition Beyond the Field

Before attending the Eden Gardens event, Richa and her parents were honoured at Lalbazar, the Kolkata Police headquarters. From there, they travelled directly to Eden Gardens to take part in the felicitation ceremony.

Richa Ghosh’s achievements have brought immense pride not only to her family but to Bengal and India as a whole. In the recently concluded Women’s World Cup, she hit the highest number of sixes — a total of 12 — playing a pivotal role in India’s success with her rapid scoring in both the semi-final and final matches.

A Lasting Tribute

On Monday, Banerjee reiterated that India’s victory in the Women’s World Cup deserved to be celebrated in a lasting way. “Among the champions was our very own Richa Ghosh. To honour her contribution, we will build a stadium in her name,” the Chief Minister announced.
