On Monday, as Manoj Tiwary , a stalwart in first-class cricket, bid farewell following Bengal's impressive victory over Bihar at the Eden Gardens in the final league-stage game of the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, the former Indian cricketer shared his most significant career regret. He questioned a particular decision by MS Dhoni , the legendary wicketkeeper, during Dhoni's captaincy of the Indian team.
Tiwary entered the international cricket scene in 2008 and participated in 12 ODIs and three T20I matches over seven years and across eight distinct series. In December 2011, he marked a significant milestone by notching his maiden international century, an unbeaten 104 against West Indies in Chennai. Despite this achievement, he faced a prolonged seven-month wait for his next international opportunity.
After announcing his retirement, Tiwary expressed his desire to seek an explanation from former captain Dhoni regarding why he had to wait for 14 consecutive matches despite his century performance, which earned him the Player of the Match award. He highlighted the disappointment of being overlooked for the 2012 Australia tour, especially when some key players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Suresh Raina were struggling to score runs during that series.
"I want to hear from him whenever I get the opportunity. I will definitely ask this question. I would like to ask Dhoni why I was dropped from the team after scoring the century, especially in that tour of Australia where nobody was scoring runs, neither was Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma or Suresh Raina. I have nothing to lose now," Manoj said.

One of Tiwary's major regrets was not receiving a Test cap. Despite showcasing impressive numbers in first-class cricket and delivering noteworthy performances against Australia and England in practice matches, Tiwary lamented that the Indian selectors opted for Yuvraj Singh over him, despite his consistent efforts in domestic cricket.
"When I had completed playing 65 first-class matches, my batting average was around 65. The Australia team had toured India then, and I had scored 130 in a friendly game, then I scored 93 against England in a friendly game. I was very close, but they picked Yuvraj Singh instead. So Test cap and the fact that I was ignored after getting the Man of the Match award for scoring a hundred...I was ignored for 14 straight matches. When self-confidence is at its peak and someone destroys that, it tends to kill that player," Tiwary added.
The 38-year-old, who also serves as the junior Sports Minister of Bengal, concluded his first-class career with an impressive record of over 10,000 runs in 147 matches since making his debut in 2004.
