As per reports, General Manager Bill Guerin and owner Craig Leipold of the Minnesota Wild thought Hughes would sign a contract extension before the season began. But it didn’t happen, as they were clearly willing to offer him the maximum amount of money they can, and for whatever term he would like. Even though Hughes has urged about how much he’s enjoyed his time in Minnesota, he’s held off on putting pen to paper.

Quinn Hughes’ Wild contract talks could drag on for months, NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun warns
Quinn Hughes' contract situation with the Minnesota Wild could take several more months now, despite showing interest with the club. Hughes is entering the final season of his current six-year contract, which carries an average annual value of $7.85 million.

The 26-year-old defenseman is eligible for a contract extension and has emerged as one of the NHL's premier blueliners. Despite the Wild’s desire to secure their star defenseman on a long-term deal, there appears to be no immediate urgency from Hughes’ camp.

This was confirmed by NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun while speaking on TSN's SportsCentre; he stated, “My understanding of the situation is that it’s rather simple: He’s in no rush. This could take months before he decides his future. It’s a tough situation for the all-in Wild. … But all Minnesota can do is wait. It’s a story that isn’t going away.”

Previously, Hughes joined the Wild in a blockbuster trade with the Vancouver Canucks in December 2025. He quickly became an important part of Minnesota's blue line and helped the team reach the second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The former Norris Trophy winner is entering the final season of the six-year, $47.1 million contract he originally signed with Vancouver. He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, 2027, if he does not sign an extension.

In fact, Hughes has previously expressed that he is not rushing into a decision soon and has expressed the same during the NHL/NHLPA media tour in September. He said that the new contract would be completed when he felt the timing was right and that he wanted to make a decision that would be good for everyone.

Meanwhile, it has come to light that the Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin has also expressed confidence that the two sides can eventually reach an agreement, hinting at the possibility soon, as Hughes' current contract is set to expire after the 2026-27 season, giving Minnesota and the defenseman time to work out the details.

With Hughes holding considerable leverage, the defenseman's long-term future in Minnesota may remain one of the NHL's biggest storylines well into the 2026-27 season.
