Pat Cummins Named Sunrisers Hyderabad Captain For IPL 2024 Season
In a significant leadership shift, Pat Cummins has been appointed as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the upcoming 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, taking over the reins from Aiden Markram .
This marks Cummins' debut as a captain in the IPL, and it sees him reunited with Daniel Vettori , who assumes the role of SRH's head coach while also serving as an assistant coach for the Australian cricket team .
The announcement of Cummins' captaincy was made by SRH through their official social media channels.
Cummins was acquired by SRH for a hefty sum of INR 20.5 crore during the IPL auction held in Dubai the previous year. With this appointment, he joins the ranks of David Warner as the second Australian to lead SRH, following Warner's successful stint as captain from 2015 to 2021, spanning 67 matches.
Having debuted in the IPL in 2014 for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Cummins' initial season saw limited participation with just one match played. He later had a brief stint with Delhi Daredevils in 2017 before taking a hiatus from the IPL. Cummins made a high-profile return to KKR during the 2020 auction, where he fetched a staggering price tag of Rs 15.50 crore, emerging as the costliest player.
His association with KKR continued until 2022, after which he opted out of the IPL in 2023 to prioritize his commitments to international cricket. Over the years, Cummins has also represented Delhi Capitals in addition to his tenure with KKR.
Cummins, who led Australia to victory in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) and Men’s ODI World Cup, takes charge of SRH from Markram, who captained the team in the previous two seasons without notable success.
