Suchika Taryal Makes History as First Indian to Win MMA Medal at Asian Games

Nagoya, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Suchika Taryal has made history for India at the Asian Games by becoming the first athlete from the country to win a medal in mixed martial arts (MMA). Competing in the traditional 60-kilogram event, she secured a bronze medal on September 21, 2026, in Nagoya. Her remarkable journey came to a close in the semifinals, where she faced Singapore's Hoon Tio in a closely contested match that extended into overtime.Despite her narrow defeat, Taryal's performance ensured her place on the podium, marking a significant achievement for Indian MMA on a continental stage. Although visibly disappointed after the decision was announced, the 36-year-old athlete returned to India with a historic medal. This achievement is a major milestone for MMA in the country. Taryal's path to the semifinals included an impressive quarterfinal victory against Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baigalmaa, where she won 2-0, thus securing her spot as the first Indian athlete to earn a medal in MMA at the Asian Games.This bronze medal adds to Taryal's list of accomplishments. Previously, she was a national-level judo player and represented India at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022, where she reached the bronze medal match. She also participated in the kurash event at the 2023 Asian Games and established herself in high-level jiu-jitsu, winning a world title in jiu-jitsu fighting in 2024. Taryal began her MMA career in 2017, starting with a victory but then stepping away from the sport for nearly seven years to focus on judo and jiu-jitsu.After strengthening her skills in these disciplines, she made a successful return to MMA, signing a multi-fight deal with Brave Combat Federation in November 2024. This marked a pivotal moment in her career, allowing her to gain international recognition. Despite facing challenges, including a knee injury, Taryal's comeback was impressive, and her participation in the popular reality TV show "Roadies" further increased her visibility beyond the sports world.MMA is among six new sports featured for the first time at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, alongside freestyle BMX, teqball, paddle, surfing, and virtual taekwondo.
