Suryakumar Yadav's IPL 2024 Kickoff With Mumbai Indians In Doubt, BCCI Source Claims
The upcoming 2024 IPL season is poised to witness the return of several Indian players who have been recuperating from their injuries, including key figures like KL Rahul , Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya. Also on the mend is India's T20 dynamo, Suryakumar Yadav , who underwent groin surgery for a sports hernia roughly two months ago.
Despite his progress, Surya's return to the field, akin to Rishabh Pant, might not be as swift as others.
Presently, Surya is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), gradually regaining full fitness. However, based on his social media activity and posted videos, it appears he's primarily focused on strength and conditioning exercises, yet to commence skill training or batting practice. Consequently, uncertainty looms over his availability for Mumbai Indians at the onset of the tournament.
A BCCI source stated to PTI, "Surya's rehabilitation is on track and he will certainly ' Return to Play ' in the IPL itself. However it is still not clear whether the NCA's Sports Science and Medical Team will give clearance to play in the first two away games against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad."
Mumbai Indians kick off their campaign on Sunday, March 24, against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, followed by another away fixture against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. As per the insider, Surya's involvement in these matches remains uncertain.
"There are still 12 days to go before MI play their first game but it could be a race against time to get fit by the first match itself," the source added. Given Surya's pivotal role for MI in recent seasons, although there's a backup in Vishnu Vinod, the franchise is eager for their top T20 batsman to return to action promptly.
