WPL 2024: Michael Klinger Appointed Head Coach For Gujarat Giants, Replacing Rachael Haynes
Michael Klinger is set to take on the role of head coach for the Gujarat Giants in the upcoming 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL), succeeding Rachael Haynes in the position. Joining the coaching staff alongside mentor Mithali Raj and bowling coach Nooshin Al Khadeer, Klinger brings his recent coaching experience with the Sydney Thunder, where he guided the team to the playoffs in the 2023 edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL).
Klinger expressed his enthusiasm for his new role and eagerly anticipated collaborating with Mithali, who is renowned as one of India's premier batters in world cricket.
Klinger said, “The Gujarat Giants have a chance to do something special in Season two of the Women’s Premier League. I’m eagerly looking forward to working with cricketing legend Mithali Raj, who has played a transformative role in women’s cricket in India. I hope to take the team to ultimate glory.”
He is recognised as a domestic cricket stalwart, faced the challenge of playing in the same era as some of Australia's cricket legends. In his prolific career, the right-handed batter accumulated 11,320 runs in 182 first-class matches, 7,449 runs in List A cricket, and 5,960 runs in T20 cricket.
Despite his impressive domestic records, Klinger had limited opportunities at the international level, featuring in only three T20Is for the Australian team. Transitioning into coaching, he served as the head coach of the Melbourne Renegades for two seasons and later assumed the role of assistant coach at Sydney Thunder in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL).
During his tenure with the Thunder, Klinger mentored the emerging left-handed batter Phoebe Litchfield. Notably, the Gujarat Giants secured Litchfield in the auction for a substantial sum of INR 1 crore.
Mithali said, "Working with Michael will help bring out the best in the Gujarat Giants players. His expertise with the bat is also well-known, and will surely benefit some of the younger members of our team. We look forward to having Klinger in the dressing room. We are sure of attaining success with him as head coach.”
The decision to incorporate Klinger into the coaching staff appears to be a response to the Gujarat Giants' underwhelming performance in the inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL). The team faced an early setback when their appointed captain, Beth Mooney, had to withdraw from the tournament due to a calf injury sustained in the opening game.
In response, the Giants appointed Sneh Rana as the new captain for the remainder of the season and brought in Laura Wolvaardt to replace the injured Mooney. Despite these adjustments, the Giants experienced a challenging season, losing six out of eight matches and concluding at the bottom of the league table.
