Drone startups look to stay afloat via Namo Drone Didi Scheme
Drone startups say they are struggling to stay afloat amid low demand, high certification costs and the absence of large-scale buyers. Their founders are pinning hopes on a central scheme announced nearly two years ago that they expect would boost sales significantly.
The central government allocated Rs 1,261 crore for the Namo Drone Didi scheme for the 2023-26 financial years to provide 14,500 drones to women’s self-help groups (SHGs), with the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare as the nodal agency. While the scheme was formally launched in November 2023, no procurement or distribution has taken place yet, with a government circular citing “administrative reasons” for the delay.
