The Indian government has introduced DIGIPIN , a new digital address system designed to provide precise identification of locations across the country. This system aims to significantly enhance services such as last-mile delivery for e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart, while also improving emergency response efficiency for police, ambulance, and fire services.

According to the official press release, DIGIPIN is an open-source, interoperable, geo-coded, and grid-based digital address system. The government describes it as a tool to facilitate secure and efficient communication between citizens and various entities, including both government and private organisations.

A Solution for Unstructured Addresses

DIGIPIN is intended to simplify address identification, especially in regions where formal addressing systems are either lacking or inconsistent. These include rural areas, forests, and maritime zones. As the system is gradually rolled out nationwide, DIGIPIN is expected to enhance geolocation precision across India—a feature that has previously been inconsistent.

What is DIGIPIN?

DIGIPIN is a ten-character alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies a 4 x 4 square metre area anywhere in India. This makes it suitable for use in urban areas, villages, and even maritime and remote locations.

The technology behind DIGIPIN has been developed by the Department of Posts in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre, under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Each DIGIPIN encodes the geographic coordinates of a location but does not store personal information, ensuring user privacy. Its accuracy is influenced by the device used to capture the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data.

Importantly, DIGIPIN does not replace the traditional six-digit PIN code used in postal addresses. Instead, it is designed to function as an additional layer of precision on top of the existing system.

How to Generate or Check Your DIGIPIN

To identify the DIGIPIN for your home or any specific location, follow these steps:

3. Allow the site to access your location when prompted.

Accept the privacy policy by clicking on “I Consent.”

The system will generate a unique alphanumeric DIGIPIN, displayed at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

You can also use the portal to generate DIGIPINs based on geographical coordinates, or to find coordinates from an existing DIGIPIN.
