More than eight years after SpaceX first launched its Falcon Heavy rocket on February 6, 2018, Elon Musk has reflected on why he decided to send his personal midnight-cherry Tesla Roadster and a spacesuit-clad mannequin named “Starman” into deep space. Musk explained that as it was the inaugural demonstration mission of the heavy-lift booster, he anticipated that the rocket would likely malfunction and fail. He also said that rather than loading a standard, dull test mass like a slab of concrete, he decided to launch the car with a mannequin.
