Indian Engineers Urged to Embrace Interdisciplinary Thinking for Future Success
New Delhi, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Mizoram Governor Dr. Vijay Kumar Singh recently called on the next generation of engineers to adopt interdisciplinary thinking during the 18th Institution of Engineers (India) Industry Excellence Summit and Awards 2026 in New Delhi. He stressed that India's technological leadership will hinge on engineers who can transcend traditional academic and professional boundaries.
In his address, the governor highlighted the crucial role of engineering in India's development and urged young professionals to carry forward this legacy. The summit was themed “Engineering India’s Global Footprint: Technology, Talent, and Trust.” Dr. Singh pointed out that India's engineering achievements span various sectors, including dams, steel plants, highways, metro networks, renewable energy systems, telecommunications, space programs, indigenous defense manufacturing, and digital public infrastructure.He emphasized that while the country has made significant strides, the responsibility for shaping the next phase of development rests with today's engineering talent. He noted that the lines between different engineering disciplines are rapidly blurring. Civil engineers, for instance, now need expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), sensors, artificial intelligence, and climate modeling. Meanwhile, mechanical engineers are increasingly focusing on robotics and advanced manufacturing technologies.Electrical engineers are exploring energy storage and smart grid technologies, while software engineers are becoming more integrated with hardware systems, cybersecurity, and physical infrastructure. Dr. Singh urged engineering graduates to move beyond narrow specializations and collaborate across disciplines, experiment with new ideas, and develop practical solutions for real-world challenges. He advocated for a greater emphasis on design thinking, field exposure, interdisciplinary projects, and prototyping in engineering education.The governor also highlighted India's capacity for large-scale infrastructure development, stressing the importance of maintaining existing assets. He cited the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as a significant success story in engineering, noting that while it is often viewed as a fintech innovation, it is underpinned by advanced engineering principles, including interoperability, distributed systems, cybersecurity, real-time processing, and extensive digital infrastructure.Dr. Singh also referenced India's space program as a prime example of engineering excellence achieved despite resource and technology constraints.
