Meta Confirms Old WhatsApp macOS App Will Stop Functioning: Upgrade Now

Why is the Old WhatsApp macOS App Shutting Down?

Meta has recommended that users download the updated version either from the WhatsApp website or from the Mac App Store to ensure continued access to the platform.
The older version is being retired due to its outdated technology. It was built using Electron, which essentially operated as a web-based application on macOS. This design had certain performance constraints that made it unsuitable for handling the latest features WhatsApp now offers.
In contrast, the new macOS version of WhatsApp is built with Catalyst technology, which allows the app to run natively on Macs. This change significantly improves the app’s speed and responsiveness to new functionalities, offering a much better user experience.
To use the new WhatsApp app, your macOS device needs to be running version 11 or higher. Meanwhile, WhatsApp still lacks a dedicated app for iPad users, who must rely on the web-based version to use the messaging service on their tablets.
