Simpsons Hit and Run remake rumours spark as showrunner says 'never say never'

The executive producer of The Simpsons has commented on whether the beloved Hit and Run game could ever make a comeback, and it’s got fans living in hope once again.

Speaking to People, Matt Selman said that he would ‘never say never’ to the iconic game making a return. “Because we know people love it. We know they want it, so that's good. If we know people want it, never say never," he says.

The Simpsons Hit and Run released back in 2003 for the PlayStation 2, GameCube, Xbox and PC. It took inspiration from games like GTA, but dropped the open-world driving concept into different areas of Springfield.

Spread across seven levels, the game quickly became a cult classic with endless calls for the title to be remastered or remade over the last two decades. Despite the game’s overwhelming popularity, anything of the like is yet to see the light of day.

Selman was a writer on The Simpsons Hit and Run back when it was in development at Radical Entertainment. He now serves as the executive producer of the long-running animated TV series, which has just aired its 800th episode.

Radical Entertainment went on to be acquired by Activision Blizzard in 2008, which was then subsequently acquired by Microsoft in 2023. Disney currently owns the rights to The Simpsons after acquiring 20th Century Fox in 2019.

Apparently, Radical Entertainment was offered the rights to develop three sequels to Hit and Run, but an undisclosed person at the studio turned the offer down. That’s according to , a lead level designer on Hit and Run at the time.

Currently, a Hit and Run remake doesn’t appear to be in the works - but it’s certainly something that the gaming community would lap up. “I hope it happens. Loved playing this game back in the day,” reads one Reddit comment.

Another replies saying: “Same here, I had it on the PS2 and I loved playing it. I remember during summer break, I'd wake up early (just after my parents left for work), just so I could do my chores early and then play for the rest of the morning.”

The most recent appearance of The Simpsons in a video game was in Fortnite, where the world map was transformed into Springfield for a short time.

Although a Hit and Run remake would likely be a hit among gamers, it looks like we’re still playing the waiting game on one actually seeing the light of day.
