Smartphone Screen Protectors To Get New BIS Rules From 2027: What Users Need To Know

Smartphone users often rely on tempered glass and other screen protectors to guard their displays against scratches and accidental damage. However, the rules governing these products are set to change. The government has brought mobile phone screen protectors under mandatory BIS certification requirements, introducing quality standards for products sold in the market.

New rule starts from April 2027

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, screen protectors made for smartphones will have to meet the Indian Standard IS 19348:2025.

The new requirement will come into effect from April 1, 2027. From this date, manufacturers and importers will need to follow the prescribed standards and complete the required BIS certification process to sell these screen protectors in India.

Companies have been given time to prepare for the new requirement, including product testing and other certification procedures.

Quality will cover more than just fit

The new standard is not simply about whether a screen protector fits a particular smartphone model. It also lays down requirements for the materials and construction used in these products.

Factors such as the thickness, size, shape, strength and quality of the glass are covered under the standard. This means manufacturers will need to ensure that their products meet specified requirements rather than relying only on compatibility with a phone's display.

Extra layers will also come under the standard

Modern screen protectors often come with additional features designed to improve protection or viewing comfort. These components are also covered by the new standard.

The requirements include aspects related to adhesive layers, anti-shatter films, oleophobic coatings, anti-glare films, blue-light filters and privacy films.

This could bring greater consistency in the design and quality of screen protectors available in the market.

What does this mean for smartphone users?

For consumers, the biggest change could be greater clarity about the quality standards that screen protectors must meet. Products that do not comply with the prescribed requirements may face restrictions once the new rules take effect.

At the same time, the change could affect prices and availability. Manufacturers and importers will have to spend on testing and certification to meet the new requirements. Some of these additional costs could eventually be reflected in the prices of screen protectors.

For now, consumers do not need to make any immediate changes. The new requirements are scheduled to apply from April 1, 2027, giving companies time to bring their products in line with the prescribed BIS standards.
