Stop WhatsApp Photos and Videos from Downloading Automatically on Your Phone

WhatsApp can fill a phone with photos, videos and documents faster than you expect, especially if you belong to several active groups. A video you never intended to keep may download in the background, use mobile data and take up storage. WhatsApp lets you choose which types of files download automatically and whether downloaded media appears in your phone’s photo gallery.

These are two different controls.

Turning off media auto-download means you choose when to download a file in a chat. Turning off Save to Photos or Media visibility prevents new WhatsApp media from appearing automatically in the phone’s Photos or Gallery app; it does not necessarily stop the file from downloading inside WhatsApp. Choose the setting that matches the problem you want to solve.

How to stop automatic downloads on iPhone

If you want to decide for yourself which photos and videos to download, follow these steps in WhatsApp:

Open WhatsApp

and tap Settings at the bottom of the screen. Depending on the app version, Settings may be shown through your profile icon.

Select Storage and Data.

Find the Media Auto-Download section.

Tap Photos and select Never to stop photos downloading automatically.

Return to the same section, tap Videos and select Never.

Review Audio and Documents as well if you receive many files of those types.

You can make a less restrictive choice by selecting Wi-Fi

for a media category. This allows automatic downloads when your phone is connected to Wi-Fi while avoiding those downloads over mobile data. WhatsApp presents the choices by file type, so you might, for example, allow photos on Wi-Fi and require a tap before downloading videos.

With Never selected, the message still arrives in the chat. You can open the conversation and download an individual item when you actually want to see or keep it. Turning off auto-download does not block people from sending you media.

How to stop automatic downloads on Android

The Android menu handles the choice by connection type

. The usual path is:

Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu at the top right.

Tap Settings, then Storage and data.

Under Media auto-download, open When using mobile data.

Clear the checkboxes for Photos, Videos, Audio or Documents, according to what you want to control, then save the selection.

Repeat the check under When connected on Wi-Fi if you also want to prevent downloads on Wi-Fi.

Check When roaming

so large files do not download automatically when your phone is using a roaming connection.

To stop automatic photo and video downloads completely, leave those file types unselected for each connection type. The wording or position of a menu may vary slightly with your version of WhatsApp, but Storage and data is the place to look for the download controls.

Keep media from one chat out of your gallery

A busy family or work group may be your main source of unwanted gallery photos. You can change the gallery setting for that conversation without changing every chat.

On iPhone

, open the chat or group, tap its name at the top, then look for Save to Photos. Choose Never to stop new media from that conversation being saved automatically to the Photos app.

On Android, open the chat or group and tap its name to view its information page. Select Media visibility, choose No and confirm. This stops newly downloaded media from that conversation appearing automatically in the phone’s Gallery app. A similar general Media visibility

Will changing the settings free storage immediately?

No. These controls affect future media handling; they do not delete photos or videos that have already downloaded. To reclaim space, open WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage

and review large files or chats with substantial media. Check an item before deleting it, particularly if it is the only copy of a document or photo you need.

A useful setup for many people is to stop videos downloading automatically on both mobile data and Wi-Fi, then choose individual videos to download from chats. If your main frustration is a crowded Photos or Gallery app, change the saving or visibility setting as well. That combination puts you in control of both what downloads
