WhatsApp Lets Users Pick Download Quality For Photos And Videos

WhatsApp has begun rolling out a significant new feature in its latest iOS beta update, version 25.29.10.71, via the TestFlight beta program. The update now allows users to select the quality of photos and videos they download.

Currently, the feature is available only to select beta testers, but it is expected to be accessible to a wider audience in the coming weeks.

Balancing Data Usage and Image Quality

This update gives users greater control over their media downloads. By letting users choose the quality of incoming photos and videos, WhatsApp now allows a balance between conserving mobile data and enjoying high-quality visuals.

With the choice between standard and HD quality, users can manage storage space, reduce data consumption, and still enjoy visually sharp media depending on network conditions.

How to Enable the Feature

Users can access the new option under the “Storage and Data” section in WhatsApp settings. Once enabled, a new “Auto-download quality” setting allows control over how photos and videos are downloaded automatically.

From this menu, users can select either standard quality or HD quality for incoming media.

How It Works

When someone sends an HD photo or video, WhatsApp generates both a standard and an HD version. End-to-end encryption ensures files cannot be modified on the server, so both versions are uploaded by the sender.

The recipient’s app then downloads the version based on the user’s selected setting. This dual-version system maintains privacy while giving flexibility in media management.

File Size Information Added

WhatsApp is also introducing a feature that displays file sizes of shared photos and videos directly in the chat.

For media that has both standard and HD versions, tapping the HD icon provides an overview of the exact file size in megabytes. This helps users make informed decisions about which version to download based on storage space and data limits.

With this update, WhatsApp reinforces its focus on giving users more control over data usage, storage management, and overall media quality without compromising privacy.
